The Toronto Police Service has released an image of a vehicle believed to be connected to two shooting incidents at separate locations of the same Jewish-owned bakery.
The first shooting occurred at Kiva’s Bagel Bar on Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West at around 11:15 p.m. on July 25. Police say an SUV arrived and gunfire shattered the front glass of the bakery. The bakery was closed at the time and no injuries were reported.
An hour later, the second shooting occurred at the bakery located near Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue West. Police say a firearm was discharged from the vehicle and struck the bakery’s front windows. The bakery was closed at the time, and there were no injuries.
Investigators believe the same dark-coloured SUV may have been involved in both incidents and have released an image of the vehicle. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed either shooting, has dash-cam or security camera footage from the areas at the relevant times, or has information that could assist the investigation to contact police.
In a statement on X, Prime Minister Mark Carney
said he
is “appalled by the targeting of two Kiva’s Bagel Bar locations.” The prime minister said the two restaurants are fixtures of Toronto’s Jewish community, and that those Canadians should be “able to live, work, and worship free from fear, intimidation, and hate.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford
said he was
“totally disgusted by the shootings and vandalism that took place in Toronto over the last few days.” Ford said on social media that police are investigating the shootings and he expects “all those responsible to be found, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
Toronto Mayor
Olivia Chow called
the attacks on the Kiva’s Bagel Bar locations “vile and unacceptable” and said all Canadians have a responsibility to stand against hate. “We will continue to invest in community safety and the necessary work of confronting hate wherever it exists,” she said.
Conservative MP and Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman
said the
shootings are a “targeted campaign of intimidation on one community” and that Canada needs to “wake up to the hatred metastasizing in its streets.”
There have been several attacks against Jewish communities in Canada following the October 7 massacre by Hamas and Israel’s subsequent invasion of the Gaza Strip in 2023. These have included fire-bombings and overnight shootings at synagogues and Jewish community centres in Montreal and Toronto.
The bakery shootings occurred shortly before another shooting outside the U.S. Consulate—the second such incident there in 2026—after the diplomatic mission was also targeted by gunfire in March. Toronto police said officers heard a firearm discharged outside the consulate in the downtown core at 4:46 a.m. on July 27, and a white sedan was seen leaving the scene. No injuries were reported.
