Trump Has Received Xi — And the Summit Is Today

Last night President Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping a rare personal welcome at Joint Base Andrews — red carpet, honor guard, the full state-visit treatment. It is Xi’s first state visit to Washington in more than a decade, and it reciprocates the ceremonial welcome Trump received in Beijing in May.

This morning the real meeting begins: Oval Office talks, a formal White House ceremony, and a state dinner tonight with America’s top tech CEOs at the table. On the agenda: extending the U.S.–China trade truce, agriculture and rare earths, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, Iran, and Ukraine.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already teed up a short extension of the trade truce into early next year, with more economic work still unfinished. Trump is looking for tangible wins. Beijing will press on Taiwan and export controls. And the Iran war — where China still buys oil and sells dual-use goods — sits in the middle of it all.

This is no longer “Xi next on the calendar.” It is happening as Barbara and Susan go live.
