US Military Strikes Suspected Drug Boat in Caribbean, Killing 3

U.S. military forces struck a suspected drug-smuggling boat in the Caribbean Sea and “killed three narco-terrorists” on board, said officials on Wednesday.

The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which oversees U.S. military operations in Central and South America, wrote that it “executed a lethal kinetic strike on a go-fast vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean.”

“Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel’s active involvement in narco-trafficking,” the command wrote in a post on X, providing what appears to be a video of the strike.

“The operation killed three narco-terrorists.”

For the past year or so, the U.S. military has launched strikes against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean and in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, coming more than a year after the Trump administration declared drug cartels and criminal gangs as foreign terrorist organizations.

President Donald Trump’s administration has stated the vessels it has struck since September 2025 were transporting narcotics, ultimately bound for the United States, in what the military calls Operation Southern Spear.

The operation hit its one-year mark on Sept. 1, 2026.

“The foreign terrorist organizations that operate in Mexico and across the Western Hemisphere are responsible for more American deaths than any other adversary that we have faced in recent memory,” a U.S. official told reporters during a press call earlier this month.

Earlier this week, the military said it intercepted and sank a floating refueling station that was allegedly used by drug traffickers in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

“After clearing the vessel and disembarking the crew, U.S. forces sank it,” SOUTHCOM said in a statement, including video footage of the incident.

The station was linked to Los Choneros, an organized crime group based in Ecuador that was designated as a terrorist organization by the Trump administration last year.

Another floating refueling vessel was struck on Aug. 28, which SOUTHCOM said was “identified and targeted under Department of the Treasury sanctions, was operating in support of the Los Choneros violent narco-terrorist organization.”

Human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called the U.S. strikes on drug boats unlawful extrajudicial killings.

Democratic lawmakers have also raised questions about the legality of the operation.

House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-Wash.), in a Sept. 2 statement, deemed the operation “unauthorized” and said little evidence has been provided to Congress demonstrating that the activities of those boats “warrant lethal military force rather than law enforcement-led interdiction.”

Also unclear is whether the strikes have put a dent in stopping illegal drugs from being trafficked into the United States, Smith added in his statement.

Last year, Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) sought to prevent the Trump administration from using military strikes against suspected drug boats, pushing a resolution under the War Powers Act of 1973 that ultimately failed in the Senate.

Trump suggested in a September 2025 Truth Social post, at the onset of the drug boat strikes, that the military campaign would stop “mass murder, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and acts of violence and terror” carried out by drug cartels and gangs across the Americas.

“Please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America,” he wrote at the time.
