Chrysler Recalls 328,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees Over Rear Coil Springs That May Detach

FCA US (Chrysler) is recalling 328,381 vehicles because real coil springs that may have been incorrectly installed could detach from the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of an accident.

According to a report posted on Sept. 8 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicles affected include 2021–2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L models, 2022–2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE models.

If a real coil spring detaches while a vehicle is being driven, the report said, it could create a road hazard for other drivers and cause a crash without warning, potentially injuring other road users.

Safety risk letters to owners of possibly affected vehicles are expected to be mailed on Sept. 29. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available.

In the meantime, owners can contact FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403 using the recall number 89D. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on Sept. 9.

Dealers will replace the real coil spring lower isolators free of charge.

The automaker became aware of the possible defect in June 2023, resulting in an earlier recall. In September 2025, Chrysler sent a pre-investigation request identifying 20 complaints about coil spring separation after the first recall repair was completed.

A month later, 70 potentially related claims were identified in internal data, and in November 2025, Chrysler opened an investigation that continued through July 2026, when a new probe began in mid-July.

“Vehicles already repaired under the previous recalls will need to have the new remedy completed,” the NHTSA report said.

As of Aug. 6, Chrysler is aware of 29 customer assistance records and 406 warranty claims. No accidents or injuries related to the issue had been reported.

Earlier this week, Chrysler recalled more than 239,000 RAM vehicles due to rearview camera issues. That recall included certain 2025 and 2026 RAM 1500 models in which a radio software error could cause the rearview image not to display.

Just last month, the automaker’s parent company Stellantis recalled 1.271 million RAM 1500 vehicles over improperly installed seat belt buckle anchors. The glitch could cause the seat belts to fail to restrain occupants and increase the risk of injury in an accident.

Last year, the company issued another large recall involving more than 250,000 2022–2025 Pacifica and Voyager vehicles with possible airbag defects.
