A Canada-wide recall has been issued for an over-the-counter pain reliever because it may contain “foreign material” that poses a risk to the digestive system.

Teva Canada has announced a recall of a batch of 500-milligram Nov-Gesic Forte acetaminophen because the pills could contain phenolic resin or epoxy, Health Canada said in a Sept. 10 advisory

Phenolic resin is a synthetic plastic and epoxy is a synthetic high-strength adhesive that if ingested, “may cause injury to the digestive system,” the notice said.

The pills affected are identified as Lot No. 100083040, which expire on Jan. 31, 2029. They were supplied to pharmacies in bottles of 1,000 and were distributed to patients in smaller doses.

“Health Canada is monitoring the recall and the company’s preventative and corrective actions,” the federal agency said. “If additional safety concerns arise, Health Canada will take appropriate action and inform Canadians as needed.”

For now, the health agency is advising consumers to stop using the affected product immediately and is also urging anyone who has already used the product to consult their health-care practitioner.

Anyone with product-related side effects or complaints is being asked to report them to Health Canada.

Customers can return the recalled product to their local pharmacy for replacement and proper disposal. Those who are unsure whether their product is part of the recall can check with their pharmacy, the agency said.
