Rideshare company Uber on Aug. 25 introduced live video for parents to watch their teens as a feature of the company’s teen accounts.

“We’re adding another feature to give parents peace of mind: live video streaming,” Uber Director of Product Management Ashu Manohar stated in a press release. “School. Practice. A friend’s house. Teens have places to be, and parents want to stay plugged in along the way.”

Manohar said parents who are linked to their teen’s account will receive a push notification once the teen’s ride begins. Then, through the driver’s phone’s front-facing camera, parents can watch their teens in the car in real time.

However, the live video feature will only be available if the driver chooses to enable and set it up.

Manohar said that the teen and driver will both be notified when the live video feature is in use, and the video is encrypted, meaning that no one will have access to the video once the recording automatically ends with the ride.

The feature is live in nine areas in the United States. The company did not specify where, but stated that more are on the way.

“For me, this launch represents something important about how we think about Safety at Uber. Safety isn’t a single feature. It’s a system of protections, combining technology, thoughtful product design, privacy, and multiple layers of safeguards to give people greater visibility and control when it matters most,” Rafael Pereira, Uber’s director of engineering and Brazil site lead, wrote on LinkedIn.

Uber’s Recent Ventures

This comes amid the company’s recent expansion efforts, including in the commercial autonomous vehicle industry. Uber said earlier this month that it would

invest

more than $10 billion in its robotaxis.

A couple of weeks ago, Uber, in partnership with autonomous mobility company Pony.ai, said it plans to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis in several European cities, with plans for a Middle East venture as well.

Along with Pony.ai and technology company Verne, Uber launched its first European autonomous rides last week in Zagreb, Croatia.

“Zagreb is an important first step as we work to bring AVs to millions of riders and build the world’s largest platform for AV deployment,” Uber Global Head of Autonomous Mobility Operations Annie Duvnjak said in a press release.

The company previously said it plans to deploy 120,000 autonomous vehicles over the coming years.

Last month, the company agreed to buy Germany’s

Delivery Hero

for $14.8 billion, which will expand its mobility and delivery business to 99 markets if the transaction is completed. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2027.
