Algoma Steel Group Inc. has suspended production at its electric arc furnace due to an unplanned outage at its Lake Superior Power generating facility.

The company says one of the turbine units at the power station detected an abnormal condition and was automatically taken offline. The remaining units were not affected.

Algoma Steel says it is assessing the condition of the affected equipment and evaluating various alternatives.

It says it is also bringing forward previously scheduled maintenance in order to reduce future planned downtime.

The company says downstream finishing and shipping activities continue and that based on current inventory and order positions, it does not expect a significant impact on its ability to meet committed customer delivery dates.

However, Algoma says future shipment volumes may be affected by the outage.
