Police in B.C. are reminding the public that golf carts are not meant for city streets after a West Vancouver man used the vehicle to drop his child off at school.

“There is a right way and a wrong way to manage school drop-off,” the West Vancouver Police said in a social media post. “If your plan involves a golf cart…you need a new plan.”

Police said the child was also riding in the cart at the time officers conducted their stop on the 2400 block of Haywood Ave. in West Vancouver. The municipality sits northwest of the city of Vancouver.

Authorities had the golf cart towed and handed the driver three violation tickets for not having insurance or seatbelts for himself or his passenger, resulting in a combined penalty of $765.

Police said the penalties served as a reminder that “unique solutions to handle the back-to-school rush need to be safe and legal.”

Driving a golf cart on a city street is illegal because B.C. law dictates that all vehicles operated on public roads need to be insured as well as driven by a licensed driver, police said.

They also pose a safety risk because golf carts lack essential safety features like seatbelts, turn signals, brake lights, and mirrors, police said.

“You’re a hazard to others—golf carts are not built to mix with traffic, even on quiet streets and school zones,” police added. “Please–save the cart for the golf course and prioritize student safety on busy school drop-offs.”
